Sexual Misconduct Procedures

The George Mason University policy on sexual misconduct describes the University’s means of addressing and preventing sexual misconduct, options for community members to report misconduct, definitions of prohibited behavior, sanctions imposed on those found responsible for violations, and support resources available to those impacted by sexual harassment and misconduct.  University Policy 1202 can be accessed here (Policy on Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment and Other Interpersonal Violence).

Under this policy, students may be charged with alleged violations of sexual misconduct.  A list of prohibited conduct can be viewed in Policy 1202 (see above) in Section VI.

The procedures used by the Office of Student Conduct when resolving and adjudicating  cases of sexual misconduct can be downloaded at OSC Sexual Misconduct Process 2019-20.  If a student is found ‘responsible’ for a particular violation, a range of sanctions may be considered. Sanctions are listed in the Code of Student Conduct in Section IX of the Code of Student Conduct 2019-2020

The Office of Compliance, Diversity and Ethics will investigate all complaints of student sexual misconduct.  The investigation will include interviews with the student parties involved, witnesses, an examination of documents provided, and any additional information considered by the investigator.  The final investigative report will be forwarded to the Office of Student Conduct for a review of policy violations, and subsequent disciplinary action as deemed appropriate.
