Reflective Conversation

A Reflective Conversation is one of the Alternative Resolution (AR) options that students involved in a low-level incident may opt into in lieu of the Student Conduct Process. A low-level incident refers to an incident where the severity of the impact on others is considered minimal (i.e., decorations in a dormitory, noise, etc.). Incidents not eligible for this AR include incidents that had they been adjudicated and student was found ‘Responsible’, may have resulted in a high-level sanction, such as suspension or dismissal from the University (i.e., drug distribution, abusive or threatening conduct, etc.). Incidents eligible for this AR will be determined by the OSC.

Students offered the opportunity to engage with the OSC through a Reflective Conversation may opt into the AR offered upon receiving the notice and completing the agreement (thus formalizing their request to opt in), request a meeting to learn more about the process, or request to continue with the Student Conduct process.

During the Reflective Conversation, the Responding Party will reflect on and take responsibility for their actions, identify the impact, discuss how they can repair the harm, and identify strategies to prevent potential future incidents from happening.

Potential benefits for a Responding Party participating in a Reflective Conversation include:

  1. Having direct input in the outcome of the process
  2. Opportunity to share what happened from own perspective
  3. Chance to express remorse and take responsibility
  4. Ability to share who they are beyond the incident
  5. Learn about the impact their actions may have had on others
  6. Resolution without a disciplinary record
